Cathedral of Santa Cruz de la Sierra
The Cathedral of Santa Cruz de la Sierra or Cathedral Basilica of St. Lorenz ( Spanish Catedral Basílica de San Lorenzo ) is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Santa Cruz de la Sierra , located on the central square of September 24th in Santa Cruz de la Sierra , the largest city in Bolivia . It is consecrated to the martyr Lawrence of Rome and also bears the title of a minor basilica , which led to the further name Basílica Menor de San Lorenzo .
history
The first church was built by Brother Diego de Porres under the rule of Viceroy Francisco de Toledo . At the time of the Bolivian President Marshal Andrés de Santa Cruz , it was decided to replace the old cathedral with a new church in eclectic style. The building was designed in 1845 by the French architect Felipe Bertrés, but then modified in the neoclassical style by the Welshman León Musnier and finally finished in 1915 by the Italian Victor Querezolo. In 1968 the exterior of the cathedral was renovated.
Pope John Paul II granted the cathedral the title of minor basilica in 1980 and visited it on May 13, 1988.
Building
The cathedral was built entirely from brick and lime mortar. It is known for its wooden vaults and for the painted decorations. Parts of the main altar were minted in silver in the Jesuit mission of San Pedro de Moxos. There are also four sculptural reliefs from the same mission. One of the two towers can be used as a view. Connected to the listed cathedral is a sacral museum .
