The Szeged Cathedral with the patronage of Our Lady of Hungary ( Hungarian Magyarok Nagyasszonya püspöki székesegyház ) in the Hungarian city of Szeged is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic diocese of Szeged-Csanád and the third largest church in the country. It was built as a votive church from 1913 , elevated to a cathedral in the 1920s and completed in 1930.

history

Szeged has always been a floodplain of the Tisza . In 1879 one of the largest floods in the city's history occurred, in which 90% of the houses were destroyed. In order to please God, the city council decided to build a large church. Finding a suitable plot of land for this project turned out to be difficult, which is why construction work continued until 1913. The construction work could not be finished until 1930. The reasons for the long construction period were the outbreak of the First World War and the economic recession of the 1920s. The design comes from Frigyes Schulek and Ernő Förk . After the First World War and the related assignments of territory due to the Treaty of Trianon , Szeged became the bishopric of the parts of the diocese of Csanád that remained with Hungary , whose bishopric was in what is now the Romanian Timișoara .

description

The church was built on the cathedral square, which is oriented in shape and size (12,000 square meters) to St. Mark's Square in Venice . She is a neo-Romanesque brick - Basilica to cross floor plan. The crossing is crowned by a wide-spanning dome , the west facade is flanked by two high bell towers. The height of the two facade towers is 91 meters, the height of the dome 54 meters. The dome has the shape of a tent roof and is adorned by a surrounding gallery of columns. The hero's bell is one of the five bells that ring and weighs 8,600 kg. The clock on the bell tower, with a diameter of 4.3 meters, is also one of the largest clocks in Hungary.

The entire interior shows a clear influence of Art Nouveau , which is particularly widespread in Szeged. Numerous reliefs, statues and mosaics adorn the entire interior of the church and show, among other things, the great flood. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of Mary in Hungarian costume and shoes on the church ceiling. Another important piece of equipment is a statue depicting Jesus on the cross. A white marble ciborium rises above the main altar . The organ from the Angster company is the third largest organ in Hungary with 9040 pipes . Important personalities for the diocese are buried in the crypt . The church can accommodate up to 5,000 people.
