The Cathedral of San Lorenzo Martire in Trapani has been the cathedral of the Diocese of Trapani , a Catholic diocese of the ecclesiastical province of Palermo in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily , since 1844 . It was built in the 17th century on the remains of older churches and expanded in the 18th century. The facade was given the early baroque appearance.

location

In the medieval part of the city, which extends west of Via Torrearsa, it is located on the former Ruga Amalfitania (also Loggia or Strada grande ), today's Corso Vittorio Emanuele, on which all buildings important for the urban community are located.

history

The cathedral has its origins in the Middle Ages ; it was consecrated as a church in 1421. From 1635 to 1639 it was rebuilt from scratch according to plans by Bonaventura Certo. In 1740 Giovanni Biagio Amico added the dome with its secondary domes, the portico and a bell tower. The choir apse was created inside and the building was divided into the main nave and two aisles by means of a double row of columns.

On May 31, 1844 the church was opened by Pope Gregory XVI. raised to the episcopal church.

The rectangular building with a cross-shaped floor plan is divided into three naves by rows of marble columns. Wall and ceiling frescoes as well as stucco figures form a neoclassical ornament inside, made according to designs by Jirolamo Rizzo and Onofrio Noto. The equipment includes a stone pulpit , a baptismal font, an organ with the manuals on the gallery and of course the altar . Works of art by Flemish masters such as the painting Crucifixion by Anthonis van Dyck , sculptures made of white marble such as Dead Christ by Giacomo Tartaglia or God the Father and the frescoes in the transept by Domenico La Bruna and the ceiling frescos by Vincenzo Manno are particularly worth seeing .

At the gates of the portico , supported by three round arches , two by two bronze reliefs are set in, which depict scenes from the Gospel of Matthew in the vicinity of Trapani: Mt 19.16–26 “The rich young man” and Mt 25.1–13 “Parable of the virgins ". In the porch, a wooden relief by Domenico Nolfo from a local family of artists shows an Adoration of the Magi (Adorazione dei Magi) .

The church is open to tourists except for church events. Choir concerts and organ concerts are also held.
