Cathedral of the Divine Savior (Adigrat)
The Cathedral of the Holy Savior ( Amharic በመንፈስ ቅዱስ በመድኃኒታችን ካቴድራል , Italian Cattedrale del Salvatore ) is the main church of the Catholics of the Ethiopian or Alexandrian Rite in the city of Adigrat in northern Ethiopia . It is the mother church of the Diocese of Adigrat , which in turn belongs to the Archdiocese of Addis Ababa of the Ethiopian Catholic Church ; it received this status in 1961 through the Bull Quod Venerabiles of Pope John XXIII. .
The Church of the Redeemer was built on a property called Welwalo, which was reserved for the construction of a church after the Second World War . It was the first parish, and with some additions after the elevation to the eparchy on April 19, 1969, a cathedral dedicated to the Holy Savior Jesus . It was realized on the basis of an Italian project in which the large mural Last Judgment (1970) by the Ethiopian artist Afewerk Tekle was created.
