The Alte Katholikentagsbahnhof is a former station building in Bochum-Mitte , which was erected at its former location in 1949 as a temporary measure until the completion of the new Bochum main station after the destruction of the old Bochum main station in World War II . It is located on the Essen – Dortmund main line between the western branch of the line to Herne, which was closed in 1996, and the branch in the eastern direction that was opened in 1979. In the post-war period , the site and reception building served as the main train station until 1957.

architecture

The building was erected as a simple low-rise brick building in the typical architecture of early post-war modernism . The entrance porch was made of natural stone, and a rotunda serves as a skylight above the reception hall.

history

The station had its practical test at the 73rd German Catholic Day from August 31 to September 4, 1949, the first major event in Bochum after the Second World War. After the completion of the new Bochum main station a little further east, the building was used by the Deutsche Bundesbahn as a training facility from 1957 to around 1994 and was then left to decay. In 2010, the building , which is now a listed building, was expanded into the Rotunda cultural venue on the initiative of Frank Goosen and Leo Bauer . The Riff disco has been located in an adjacent warehouse since 1994 .
