history

The history of the parish of Neufeld an der Leitha goes back to the 17th century. In 1667 a Catholic church was built using the existing Jewish temple. This was dedicated to the holy Archangel Gabriel. The sparse furnishings consisted of a wooden altar with a tabernacle, a baptismal font and a choir. Two bells hung in the stone-walled tower. The parish Hornstein took over the pastoral care for the church in Neufeld, which was described as a branch church in a visitation report from 1674.

However, as early as 1679, after lengthy negotiations, the community council and the pastor of Hornstein agreed to appoint a separate vicar who also had to keep the registers . On August 28, 1715, Matthias Kauschitz, the vicar at that time, was raised to pastor of Neufeld an der Leitha. Since then, the Neufeld parish has been an independent parish.

On April 7, 1757, a large fire raged in Neufeld, which destroyed the church and rectory. However, the rectory was repaired immediately at the expense of the patron saint Esterhazy. Construction of the new church began in 1760. Only one wall remained of the old one. When the old building was demolished, Hebrew lettering from the old synagogue and the year "1672" were discovered.

In 1940 the wafers of St. Francis de Sales the parish, but gave it up again in 1950. As the population grew, it became necessary to enlarge the church.

On the site of the old church, a modern church was built between 1966 and 1967 by the architects Rudolf Katterschafka and Herbert Witte.
