The former Catholic schoolhouse (2018)

The former Catholic school in St. Gallen was included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage worthy of protection in 1983 as part of the monastery district . The building in the classicism style was built in 1840.

history

After the New Palatinate was built as the residence of the abbot of the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen between 1767 and 1769, the plan was to expand it with a "north wing", which is an architectural counterpart to the one hundred years older " courtyard " or "south wing" should form. As a result of the abolition of the abbey, the concept of the Baroque period was not completed until the 1830s.

From 1838 to 1841, the canton built the armory as a side wing of the residence. This served as a government building from 1803. The schoolhouse was built in 1840 as an extension of this. The Guardian Angel Chapel, which was completed by 1846, closed part of the “vacant lot” . The architect of these three classicist buildings was Felix Wilhelm Kubly .

Building

The schoolhouse is a three-storey building with five window axes. He completed the baroque concept of the monastery district. The windows and the portal on the ground floor have round arches. The furnishings are classical.
