history

After the New Palatinate was built as the residence of the abbot of the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen between 1767 and 1769, the plan was to expand it with a "north wing", which is an architectural counterpart to the one hundred years older " courtyard " or "south wing" should form. As a result of the abolition of the abbey, the concept of the Baroque period was not completed until the 1830s.

From 1838 to 1841, the canton built the armory as a side wing of the residence. This served as a government building from 1803. The architect of the armory was Felix Wilhelm Kubly .
