Rabia Özden Kazan (born June 25, 1976 in Malatya , Turkey ) is a Turkish journalist. In 2015 and 2016 she was part of the entourage of Donald Trump's presidential campaign .

Life

Kazan is said to have been forced by her family to wear the Islamic headscarf (the so-called hijab ) from the age of seven . She began journalism in 1996 as a television correspondent for Istanbul Documentary and for the Flash TV channel . She then worked for six years for the Ortadoğu newspaper of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and, according to her own account, belonged to the Ülkücü movement. She became known in Turkey through her engagement to the right-wing extremist Mehmet Ali Ağca , who among others murdered the peace activist Abdi İpekçi and carried out an assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II . Kazan went to Italy to learn the language so she could read the book of Ağcas. In Italy she met her future husband, the Italian lawyer and member of the Communist Party Giacinto Licursi, which she said had a lasting impact on her way of thinking. She later founded the news magazine Haber Revizyon in Istanbul .

In 2007 Rabia Kazan traveled to Iran , from where she reported on child marriage and trafficking in women . There she met an extensive practice of Shiite system of mut'ah marriage know know. She interviewed over 200 women in Iran. After her return she published the book Tahran Melekleri ("The Angels of Tehran") about the conditions. The book is in the form of letters to her sister. She received numerous death threats for this, but her book became a bestseller in Turkey. After visiting several Middle Eastern countries, Kazan said she devoted herself to protecting women from Sharia law .

In 2008 she married Giacinto Licursi and moved with him to Rome . In 2010 she moved to the United States and worked for the World Association of United Nations Societies (UN) for two years .

In 2012, Rabia Kazan decided to take off the headscarf she had been wearing since she was seven and worked as a writer for the International Civil Liberties Alliance (ICLA) based in Switzerland . In 2014, together with the French analyst Alain Wagner, she launched the “This is not my Allah” campaign in New York , a call against Muslim terrorism .

Rabia Kazan justified her participation in the presidential election campaign of the candidate Trump on CNN by saying that moderate Muslims had to be more effective against radical Islam.
