Kathryn Stockett (* 1969 in Jackson , Mississippi ) is an American writer.

Life

Stockett grew up under the care of a black domestic servant in Jackson after her mother had left the family. She graduated from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa with a degree in English and Creative Writing and then moved to New York City . She worked there for nine years for various magazines and in marketing until 2001 .

Stockett's first novel Gute Geister (Engl. The Help ) describes the work of black domestic workers in the households of white families in their hometown in the early 1960s. Before it was published in 2009, it had been rejected by numerous publishers. The book became a huge hit, was on the New York Times bestseller list for 100 weeks and has been translated into 40 languages. It was filmed for the cinema in 2011 under the title The Help . Stockett lives with her family in Atlanta , Georgia .
