Katreus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Katreus ( ancient Greek Κατρεύς ) is the son of Minos and Pasiphae in Greek mythology . According to the Asklepiades of Samos , Krete was his mother. He became king of Crete after his father . His children were Althaimenes , Aërope , Klymene and Apemosyne .

An oracle announced that he would die at the hand of one of his children. Althaimenes and Apemosyne then emigrated to Rhodes . He married the other daughters to the mainland. Clymene married Nauplios and Aërope married Pleisthenes or, according to other tradition, Atreus . So the announced danger was averted.

When Katreus grew old, he sailed to Rhodes to hand over the government of Crete to his son. However, when he and his companions went ashore, shepherds thought they were pirates and pelted them with stones. Before the misunderstanding was cleared up, Althaimenes, Katreu's son, came in and killed his father with a spear. When he realized that the oracle had been fulfilled through him, he was engulfed in a crevice at his pleading.

His grandson Menelaus also came to Katreus' funeral . When he was far from home, Paris of Troy took the opportunity and kidnapped his wife Helena , which ultimately led to the Trojan War .

Since Katreus 'only son, Althaimenes, died, Katreus' brother Deucalion ascended the throne of Crete.
