Katsukarē ( Japanese カ ツ カ レ ー ) is a hot dish from Japanese cuisine .

Etymology and meaning

The word katsu is an abbreviation of katsuretsu , which is borrowed from the English cutlet (German: " Schnitzel , Kotelett "). Karē in turn stands for curry . The spelling Katsu Kare can also be found in German recipes .

The dish is based on Tonkatsu (similar to a Viennese schnitzel ), cut into bite-sized portions, which is served hot with a thick curry sauce and rice. Other than pork can be used.

The dish was introduced to a western restaurant in Ginza , Tokyo during the Meiji period .
