Katsuki Yasuji

Katsuki Yasuji ( Japanese 勝木保次 ; born 28. November 1905 in Komatsu ( Ishikawa ), died 6. March 1994 ) was a Japanese physiologist for his work in the field of auditory perception is known.

Katsuki Yasuji graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tōkyō University in 1931 and then devoted himself to studying the sense of hearing. After working as a military doctor in the Pacific War , he was a professor at the "Tōkyō Medical and Dental University" (東京 医科 歯 科 大学, Tōkyō ika-shika daigaku) ​​from 1949 to 1970. In 1970 he took over a professorship at the University of Tsurumi (鶴 見 大学) in Yokohama , from 1974 to 1977 he was President of the Tōkyō Medical and Dental University and from 1977 to 1979 he headed the state “Research Institute for General Physiology” (生物 科学 総 合 研究 機構, Seibutsu-kagaku sōgō kenkyū-kikō).

Katsuki's research in the field of auditory perception led to new results in sensory physiology and the development of the sense of hearing. His studies of the lateral line organ in various fish confirmed that the sense of hearing and taste developed from a common precursor organ .

In 1961 Katsuki received the Asahi Prize , in 1963 he was honored with a prize by the Academy of Sciences . In 1973 Katsuki was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in the same year . His hometown of Komatsu made him an honorary citizen.

One of his students is Nobuo Suga , who works in the USA.
