The Maras district is located in the Urubamba province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​139 km². The 2017 census counted 6,668 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 7437, in 2007 it was 6258. The district administration is located in the 3385  m high village of Maras with 1748 inhabitants (as of 2017). Maras is located 5 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Urubamba .

Geographical location

The Maras district is located on the south bank of the west-flowing Río Urubamba in the central south of the Urubamba province.

The district of Maras is bordered by the districts of Anta and Huarocondo (both in the province of Anta ) in the south, the district of Ollantaytambo in the west, the district of Urubamba in the north and the districts of Huayllabamba and Chinchero in the east .
