The Chinchero district is located in the Urubamba province of the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district founded on September 9, 1905 has an area of ​​104 km². At the 2017 census, there were 11,652 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 9146, in 2007 9422. The district administration is located in the small town of Chinchero .

Geographical location

The Chinchero district is located in the extreme southeast of the Urubamba province, 16 km northwest of the regional capital Cusco . The district is mainly located on a plateau about 3750  m high east of the Cordillera Vilcabamba . Lake Piuray is centrally located in the district .

The district of Chinchero borders in the west and north on the districts of Maras and Huayllabamba , in the east on the districts of Calca and Coya (both in the province of Calca ), in the southeast on the district of Cusco ( province of Cusco ), in the south on the district of Cachimayo and in Southwest to the districts of Pucyura and Anta (the last three in the province of Anta ).
