The Cusco district (old spelling district Cuzco ) is located in the Cusco Province of Cusco region in South Central Peru . The district has an area of 116.22 km². In the 2017 census, 114,630 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 93,187, in 2007 108,798. The administrative seat of the district is the city of Cusco with 111,930 inhabitants (as of 2017).
Geographical location
The district of Cusco is located in the northwest of the province of Cusco. In the central east of the district, the regional and provincial capital of Cusco is located in the Cusco Valley at an altitude of 3399 m . In the south-west and north, the district extends over sparsely populated mountainous areas. The highest point in the district is Mount Sinqa, at 4423 m, on the north-western boundary of the district .
The district of Cusco borders in the west on the districts Poroy and Cachimayo ( province Anta ), in the northwest on the district Chinchero ( province Urubamba ), in the north on the district Coya ( province Calca ), in the northeast on the district Taray (also in the province) Calca), in the east to the districts of San Sebastián , Wanchaq and Santiago and in the south-west to the district of Ccorca .

For the period 2019-2022 Víctor Boluarte Medina was elected Mayor (Alcalde Provincial). Due to a criminal conviction for fraud, he was suspended from the office of mayor for one year on December 17, 2019. The deputy mayor Ricardo Valderrama Fernández then took over the office for the period of the suspension.
