The district of Calca is located in the province of Calca in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 21, 1825. It has an area of 312 km². The 2017 census counted 20,628 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 14,505, in 2007 19,312. The seat of the district and provincial administration is the town of Calca , located at an altitude of 2925 m on the right bank of the Río Urubamba , with 13,519 inhabitants (as of 2017). Calca is 22 km north of the regional capital, Cusco . The archaeological site of Huch'uy Qusqu is located in the district in the mountains 5 km south-southeast of the city of Calca.
Geographical location
The district of Calca is located in the southwest of the province of Calca. It is traversed by the Río Urubamba in a north-westerly direction. In the north of the district rise the mountains of the Cordillera Urubamba .
The district of Calca is bordered to the west by the districts of Chinchero , Huayllabamba , Yucay and Urubamba (all four in the province of Urubamba ), to the north by the district of Lares , to the northeast by the districts of Challabamba and Colquepata (both in the province of Paucartambo ) and to the southeast to the districts of Lamay and Coya .
