Chinchero is a small town in south-central Peru about 15 kilometers northwest of Cusco in the direction of Urubamba in the Peruvian Andes at an altitude of 3760 meters above sea level. The city is the administrative seat of the district of the same name within the province of Urubamba ( Cusco region ). In the 2017 census, 3765 inhabitants were counted.

The city was the summer residence of the Incas , the 10th Inca Túpac Yupanqui is said to have had his favorite place to stay here. In the church from the colonial times, the foundations of which date back to the Inca period, mass is held in the indigenous language Quechua ( Qusqu-Qullaw ) to this day. On the slope below the Plaza de Armas there are also many walls from the Inca period.

A colorful Indian market takes place in Chinchero every Sunday. Textiles and handicrafts are traded here. Fruit, vegetables and sweet potatoes in all variations from local agricultural production are available here.

The Chinchero International Airport is being built in the city and will replace Cusco Airport when it is scheduled for completion in 2023 .
