Prince Yoshihito of Katsura ( Japanese 桂 宮 宜 仁 親王 Katsura-no-miya Yoshihito-shinnō; born February 11, 1948 , † June 8, 2014 in Tokyo ) belonged to the Japanese imperial family . The title and predicate was His Imperial Highness Prince Katsura (Yoshihito) .

family

Katsura came from the marriage of Prince Mikasa (Takahito) of Japan , the fourth and youngest son of the Japanese Emperor Taishō and Empress Teimei . Prince Katsura had four siblings: Princess Yasuko of Mikasa (* 1944), Prince Tomohito of Mikasa (1946–2012), Princess Masako of Mikasa (* 1951) and Prince Takamado (Norihito) (1954–2002).

Life

Katsura studied political science at Gakushūin University in Tokyo. After graduating in 1971, he completed postgraduate studies at the Australian National University in Canberra . From 1974 to 1985 he worked for the Japanese broadcasting company NHK .

After a few strokes in May 1988, his health was impaired and he was dependent on a wheelchair . Nevertheless, he was committed to social public institutions. Since then he has visited Australia several times, and in 1994, together with Princess Tomohito of Mikasa , various children's facilities there. He held various honorary positions, including:

  • President of the Japan Australia New Zealand Society
  • President of the Agricultural Society of Japan
  • President of the Japan Forestry Association
  • President of the Japan Arts & Crafts Association
  • President of the Japanese Urushi Craft Association

Since 1979, Prince Katsura was an honorary member of the Catholic student fraternity AV Edo-Rhenania to Tokyo in the Cartell Association of Catholic German student fraternities .
