Katy Abbott

Katy Abbott (also Katrina Abbott ; * 1971 ) is an Australian composer and music teacher .

Life

Katy Abbott lives in Melbourne . She studied at the Conservatory of Music at the University of Melbourne from 1998 to 1999 with Stuart Greenbaum (* 1966), Brenton Broadstock and Linda Kouvaras . Here she obtained a Bachelor of Education (Sec), a graduate diploma in composition, received a Master of Music degree and a Ph.D. in 2007 . After taking up serious composing at the age of 27, she was composer-in-residence at the Border Music Camp in 2002 . In 2011 she won the Albert H. Maggs Award for Composition and in 2013 the Boston Metro Opera Gold Medal for Art Song for the song cycle The Domestic Sublime. In January 2013 she became a Lecturer in Music (Composition) at the University of Melbourne. Since September 2018 she has been Senior Lecturer in Music (Composition) there . She received the Australia Council of the Arts Fellowship (Music) 2019/2020. In 2019, the work Hidden Thoughts was awarded the Paul Lowin Prize in the song cycle category. She is working on Hidden Thoughts 2 for string quartet, voice and narrator. The commissioned work for the Australian Flinders Quartet is set to premiere in 2020.

  • Carmen vitae / Song of life , 2000, recorded by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra
  • Souls of Fire , Symphony, 2004, premiered with the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra
  • Fast ride in a suave machine , 2006
  • The Peasant Prince for speaker and orchestra, text: Li Cunxin , literary sources are Li Cunxin's autobiography Mao's Last Dancer and the children's book The Peasant Prince, 2009, commissioned by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. The approximately half-hour work is divided into eight episodes. I Introduction II Kite Themes - Hopes and Wishes III Frog in the well IV Home and School V Leaving Home, Arriving Beijing VI By the Light of a Single Candle VII USA VIII Dance of My Life. The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra released an English and a Chinese version on CD in 2020.
  • Introduced Species, Symphony No. 2, 2014, commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

Vocal works

  • Milushka , chamber opera. Instrumentation: soprano, mezzo-soprano, tenor, clarinet in Bb, bassoon, violin, cello and drums. The world premiere took place on May 19, 2000 in the Melba Hall of Melbourne University.
  • No Ordinary Traveler , song cycle, 2006
  • It is just the heart for soprano and string quartet. The work consists of four movements. Each sentence was inspired by visiting a museum. I Hinta Palinta ( The Melbourne Museum ( Children's museum )) II Dinosaur ( The Cunningham Dax Collection ) III It is just the heart ( Science Works (The Planetarium)) IV Night thoughts ( The Holocaust Museum ) V Hinta Palinta - Reprise . The work was recorded by the Ormond String Quartet and the soprano Charlotte Betts-Dean and released on the Tall Poppies label in April 2020 .
  • The Domestic Sublime , song cycle
  • Hidden Thoughts for 6 Voices and 6 instruments, 2017, commissioned work for the Australian vocal ensemble The Song Company and the Australian instrumental ensemble Syzygy Ensemble. The text comes from the responses of over 200 women who were asked about their secret, hidden thoughts and feelings .

  • Hidden Thoughts II: Return to Sender , 2020, for female voice, narrator and string quartet. The world premiere with mezzo-soprano Dimity Shepherd, the Flinders Quartet and speaker Richard Piper is scheduled for July 23, 2020 in Melbourne. The text comes from letters from a letter campaign initiated by Julian Burnside in which Australians were asked to write letters to asylum seekers detained in Nauru. Over 2000 of these letters were returned unopened to the sender.

Choral works

  • Eyes for Treble Choir and Guitar, 1993, revised 2004, text: Jerusha Tiner. The work was recorded in 2014 on the CD Katy Abbott -Famous with the Australian guitarist Zane Banks (* 1986) and the MLC School Chamber Choir from Burwood, New South Wales .
  • The path to your door for three-part choir (soprano I, soprano II and alto) and piano. Text: Michael Leunig. Composed for The Festival of Womens Voices . First performed by The Melbourne Women's Choir on July 12, 2000 at the Ivanhoe Girls' Grammar in Melbourne. . The work was recorded in 2014 by the MLC School Chamber Choir on the Katy Abbott -Famous CD .
