Office communications clerk was a recognized three-year apprenticeship in Germany from 1991 to 2014 under the Vocational Training Act (BBIG). In the course of the changeover, this job description was integrated into the new profession of office manager . The profession was introduced in 1991, and the former two-year apprenticeship as an office assistant was abolished. The introduction of modern communication systems into the office world in particular required a fundamental reform of the office professions.

In 2011, 12,533 new training contracts were concluded in Germany. On the ranking list of apprenticeships after new degrees in Germany, the apprenticeship occupation ranks twelfth.

As of August 1, 2014, the three office professions - office communication clerk , office clerk and specialist for office communication  - were merged to form the new job profile for office management .

Employees in this occupation must have a good command of German and good English, knowledge of modern communication , information technology and an appropriately high level of writing skills to complete the paperwork. They work in secretariats , in human resources and accounting as well as in press and public relations . The training occupation of office clerk is closely related . The two professions differ in that office clerks were taught more bookkeeping ( cost and performance accounting ) and office communication clerks were taught more word processing and German in vocational school . English was usually taught in vocational school, as it is a fundamental skill for office communication clerks that is particularly important in internationally operating companies.

education

The training lasted three years. The trainees should be given the skills to organize work processes in the office. One focus was on teaching how to use modern office technology such as telephone systems and computers. In addition to the communicative aspects, knowledge of administration, business processes and personnel planning were important for the profession. The training content included:

  • operational organization and functional relationships,
  • Communication and cooperation in the office and office coordination,
  • Writing skills, text formulation and design, good language skills
  • Office management and statistics,
  • commercial management and control,
  • Basics of corporate human resources.

It is obvious to take the exam as a commercial assistant or business assistant in the office / secretariat area.
