Lake Kaulime at the end of September 2008 |
The Kaulime Lake ( English : Lake Kaulime ) is the only naturally formed lake in Nyika National Park in northern Malawi .
geography
The lake, up to 1.3 hectares in size, is located in the middle of the highlands of the Nyika plateau at an altitude of 2200 m about 8 km west of Chelinda.
description
The lake is said to have been created by a landslide that blocked the outflow of a small tributary to Northern Rukuru .
The author Richard Newton, who was originally an employee of the Department of National Parks of Malawi, describes the small lake as a puzzling phenomenon: "no inflow, no outflow, just a still water that reflects the sky".
The lake is a sacred place for many residents of the plateau. Among the Tumbuka there are followers of the traditional cults who make sacrifices for evil spirits at Lake Kaulime. After the vernacular , the lake is home to a huge snake that has extraordinary powers. The snake is supposed to enable people to communicate with their gods. Stone artifacts and seashells were found in the lake .
The wolf spider Trabea nigristernis , which lives by the lake, is a special species of spider only native to Malawi.
The lake, which is used by wild animals as a watering place away from human habitation, enables visitors to the national park to observe animals in the wild with relative ease.
