A thimble or thimble ( seamanly ; . Pl thimbles ) is made of metal or plastic reinforcement of a wire rope - or rope - eye or in cloth punched Gatchens (hole). Wood continues to be used as a material on traditional ships, for example in the form of pock wood.
use
The thimble is either spliced into rope eyes or pressed into rope , sails and tarpaulins . In the case of wire ropes, it is clamped into the rope eye with a rope clamp or crimp sleeve. They secure the material from wear and tear by means of filaments and make it easier to attach shackles , bolts and lines. In the case of wire ropes, they prevent excessive bending of the rope and thus possible rope breakage.
According to their shape, circular ring thimbles (to reinforce gatches ) are differentiated from teardrop-shaped heart thimbles (also called pointed thimbles ) (to reinforce eyes in the cordage). According to the intended use, Reff thimbles is also mentioned; This means the (ring) thimbles in the sail through which the sea reeps run in order to pull the sail down onto the boom of a sailing boat and thus reduce the sail area .
