The Kaylana Lake (also Kayalana Lake , Hindi कायलाना झील Kāyalāna Jhīl ) is an approx. 8 km² large and maximally 10 m deep lake west of the city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan , India .

The Kaylana Lake is located in a 4.5 km long and a maximum of 2 km (but mostly only 100 to 150 m) wide valley depression on the edge of the Thar desert about 4 km west of the Meherangarh fort at an altitude of about 276 m above sea level d. M.
history
The lake was created in 1872 at the instigation of the then Maharajas Pratap Singh II . For this purpose, the valley, which was once used as a hunting area, was cordoned off with a dam; older buildings and palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries sank.
use
The lake, which only fills with rainwater in the monsoon season , was created to ensure the water supply for the city of Jodhpur. Today it mainly serves as an excursion destination for the city's residents; a restaurant and boat rental can be found on its banks.
