Samuel Evan Williams (born July 15, 1943 in Dumbarton ) is a former Scottish football goalkeeper . With Celtic Glasgow he won the Scottish Championship five times , the Cup twice and the League Cup once in the 1970s .
Career
society
Evan Williams was born in Dumbarton in 1943 . He began his career in the approximately six kilometers north of Dumbarton, and 25 kilometers northwest of Glasgow city of Alexandria with FC Vale of Leven . In the 1963/64 season Williams gained first professional experience with the Scottish second division club FC East Fife . From 1964 to 1966 he played for Third Lanark . In the season 1967/68 he was active thirteen times for the English first division promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers . In October 1969, Williams was hired by Celtic Glasgow to replace Ronnie Simpson . Shortly after his signature in Glasgow, he was loaned out to Aston Villa , who was coached by Tommy Docherty at the time. Williams returned to Celtic after twelve appearances for Villa in November 1969 . The goalkeeper made his debut for the Bhoys on December 1, 1969 in the league game against FC St. Mirren in Celtic Park . In the 1969/70 season he reached the final in the European Cup with Celtic, which he lost to Feijenoord Rotterdam . In the 2-1 defeat after extra time in Milan, Williams stood between the posts and could not prevent the two goals conceded by Rinus Israël and Ove Kindvall . In the same season he won the Scottish Championship and the League Cup with his team . In the following four seasons he won four other championships with Celtic , as well as the cup in 1971 and 1972 . So he won twice the big and once the small double in Scotland . After the engagement of Ally Hunter he lost the trust of Jock Stein , so that Williams was hardly used. He played his last game in March 1974 in the European Cup against FC Basel , where he looked bad twice against goal scorer Ottmar Hitzfeld . After a total of 148 competitive games (82 in the league, 19 cup, 25 league cup, 22 European cup) Williams moved to FC Clyde in the summer of 1974 . After one season and 21 appearances, he moved to FC Stranraer where he ended his career in 1976. After his time as an active player, he coached his hometown club FC Vale of Leven. Under his former Celtic teammate Harry Hood , he was assistant coach of the Albion Rovers in 1981 . From 2001 to 2003 he coached the amateur club Ardeer Thistle from Stevenston , North Ayrshire .
