The Kazinga Channel (Kazinga Channel) is a wide, 32 km long natural channel in Uganda , which connects the Georgsee and the larger Eduardsee .

description

Fishermen on the banks of the canal

It is the dominant element of Queen Elizabeth National Park and attracts a wide variety of birds and other animals. In particular, one of the world's densest populations of hippos and Nile crocodiles can be found here . The canal is therefore also a popular destination for safari tourism.

The smaller Georgsee is only 2.4 m deep on average and is mainly fed by streams that arise in the Ruwenzori Mountains . The water flows through the Kazinga Canal into the much larger Eduardsee, which is 17 m deep on average. The water level of the canal is relatively constant due to the small height difference between the two lakes.

The two lakes were under the British monarch Edward VII. , And George V. named. Before it was renamed Queen Elizabeth National Park, the canal itself gave its name to the Kazinga National Park, established in 1952, which encompasses the area between the two lakes on both sides of the watercourse.

fauna

In 2005, a large number of hippos died on the canal as a result of an outbreak of anthrax . This disease can occur when animals eat remains of vegetation during the dry months, ingesting bacteria that can survive for decades in dry soil.
