Kazys Morkūnas

Kazys Morkūnas (born March 4, 1925 in Žiežmariai , Trakai County , now Kaišiadorys Rajongemeinde ; † January 22, 2014 in Vilnius ) was a Lithuanian glass painter.

Life

From 1946 to 1951 Morkūnas studied at the chair for decorative and monumental painting at the Institute for Applied and Decorative Arts in Kaunas . In 1952 he completed his studies with Stasys Ušinskas at the Lietuvos dailės institutas (LDI) in Vilnius. From 1953 he taught at the LDI. From 1977 to 1985 and from 1993 to 1997 he was head of the chair for drawing at VDI. From 1976 he was a professor at the institute.

In 1953, Morkūnas was one of the first to develop the experimental stained glass window from several thin fused glass layers. Early stained glass is characterized by realistic figurative painting with decorations ("Taika žemėje", 1955; " Jūratė and Kastytis ", 1956; "Subatos vakarėlį", 1959). From the seventh decade onwards, Morkūnas used bars made of glass combined with concrete, glass combined with various textures (“ Pirčiupis ”, 1962).

His works can be found in the IX fortas Museum in Kaunas, the Vilkaviškis Cathedral , the J.Baltrušaitis School in Moscow , the Punskas School, the Utena Church and the Seimas Building.
