Keg Purnell
William "Keg" Purnell (born January 7, 1915 in Charleston (West Virginia) , † June 25, 1965 in New York City ) was an American swing drummer .
Purnell studied at West Virginia State College from 1932 to 1934 and had a trio in New York in 1938/39. In 1934/35 he played and toured with King Oliver , in 1939 with Thelonious Monk , from 1939 to 1940 with Benny Carter and from 1941 to 1942 with Claude Hopkins . In 1945 he was with Rex Stewart and then until 1948 and 1951/52 in the Eddie Heywood Sextet. In the 1950s he played Dixieland jam sessions in New York. In 1953 he recorded with Willie The Lion Smith .
He never recorded as a leader, but did with Rex Stewart, Benny Carter, Eddie Heywood, Teddy Wilson , Ella Fitzgerald, and others.
