The larynx singing ( torlorsorneq , Inuktitut katajjaq ) of the Greenlandic and Canadian Inuit is a unique form of musical performance. In the traditional form it is practiced by two women who sing duets without instrumental accompaniment. More recently, the form of singing has also been practiced by female solo artists or combined by groups with mainstream music genres such as pop , folk , rock and dance music.

The throat chants of the Inuit are not overtone singing in the strict sense and also differ from those of the Tuvin , Mongolian and Khakass peoples.

Throat singing has different names depending on the country or region:

  • Greenland
    • Torlorsorneq
  • Canada
    • Katajjaq or Katadjak
    • Iirngaaq
    • Nipaquhiit
    • Piqqusiraarniq or Pirkusirtuk
    • Qiarvaaqtuq.
