Kelsey Jones

Herbert Kelsey Jones (born June 17, 1922 in South Norwalk , † October 10, 2004 in Toronto ) was a Canadian composer, harpsichordist, pianist, organist, conductor and music teacher.

Jones grew up in Portland (Maine) and went to New Brunswick in 1939 to study with Harold Hamer at Mount Allison University . Later he continued his education with Ernest MacMillan , Healey Willan and Leo Smith at the University of Toronto and from 1939-40 with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. 1948-49 he taught music theory at Mount Allison University and conducted their student orchestra. In 1950 he founded the Saint John Symphony Orchestra , whose conductor he was until 1954. From 1954 until his retirement in 1984 he taught counterpoint and fugue at McGill University .

In the 1950s, Jones performed as a piano duo with his wife Rosabelle Jones . He was harpsichordist of the McGill Chamber Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and was one of the founders of the Baroque Trio of Montreal in 1957 , which recorded his Sonata di camera and Sonata di chiesa , among others . In addition to works for the Montreal Bach Choir and the Montreal Recorder Group , the Jeunesses Musicales of Canada and the Tudor Singers of Montreal , he composed the chamber opera Sam Slick (libretto by Rosabelle Jones based on Thomas Chandler Haliburton's The Clockmaker ) for the CBC in 1967 , which was conducted by was premiered by Ettore Mazzoleni .
