Phinney started in West Yellowstone for the first time in November 2012 in the US Super Tour and finished 39th in the 10 km freestyle. In January 2016, she took her first victory in this racing series in the sprint in Lake Placid . At the U23 World Championships in 2016 in Râşnov , she came in 44th place over 10 km classic, 39th place over 10 km freestyle and 34th place in the sprint. In August 2016 she won the sprint at the Australia / New Zealand Cup in Falls Creek . At the 2017 U23 World Championships in Soldier Hollow , she came 30th in the 10 km freestyle and 16th in the sprint. In the 2017/18 season, she came in tenth place in the overall ranking of the US Super Tour with five top ten placements. She made her debut in the World Cup in March 2018 in Lahti , which she finished in 36th place in the sprint. In February 2019 she got her first World Cup points with 19th place in the sprint in Lahti.
