The Kemmler Tower , formerly Bismarck Tower , is an observation tower on the Kemmler in the Stöckigt district of Plauen , Saxony .

history

An old Kemmler tower stood on the top of the Kemmler as early as 1900, which was demolished in March 1902 by decision of the Plauen city council to make way for a Bismarckian column, which was financed with donations and could be inaugurated on August 31, 1902. This 18.25 m high observation tower with a lighting option was so popular that in 1910 an accommodation house was built next to the column. This was torn down again in 1945.

After the hard winter that followed, the forest around the Bismarck Column was cut down in 1946, so that from then on it stood free and offered a panoramic view of Plauen and the surrounding Vogtland. Also in 1946 the lookout tower was renamed the Kemmler Tower. In the following years several renovation works were carried out.

In 2002, an anniversary event was held at the tower on the 100th anniversary of the inauguration. However, there was a lack of funds for the urgently needed thorough renovation, so the tower had to be closed to visitors in 2013 for security reasons. Initially, the replacement of the upper steel staircase is planned as an emergency repair (status 2014). For the preservation of the tower, a donation campaign was launched in 2014 by the mayor of the building, Levente Sárközy , which has gained more publicity since April 2015 through a private initiative by Kai Grünler from Plauen .
