Burnett acted as the first Laird of Kemnay . The third laird, George Burnett , began developing the 53-  acre estate, which included woods and fields. The layout of the avenue also goes back to him. His son Alexander continued the agricultural development. From 1830, granite was quarried on the property , which was used, among other things, to fortify banks in London . After Kemnay House had been from the beginning constantly changing, it was in 1833 finally revised substantially and increased . The Aberdeen- based architect John Smith was entrusted with this work . The property was inherited within the family. In 1964 the Tower House was renovated.
