Kempowski Society

The Kempowski Society e. V. is a literary society that promotes the work of Walter Kempowski (1929–2007) and his memory. The association, based in Giessen , considers Walter Kempowski to be one of the most important authors of post-war literature, who has done outstanding work for the archiving and literary design of the German past; his work should therefore be preserved and interpreted especially for future generations.

history

The company was founded in Gießen in June 2007 , and the company's office was set up at the Institute for German Studies at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen . In addition to academics and journalists, the founding members also include numerous students and private individuals; today the society has members from home and abroad, such as the USA, Poland, Hungary and Italy.

Honorary president became the writer himself, who registered the foundation of the society with great joy and gratitude. It was founded with his express approval and can be seen as an attempt to make amends for the years of disregard for Kempowski in the German scholarly and cultural landscape. The founding chairman of the company was the German scholar Sascha Feuchert from Giessen ; In 2011 he was followed by the literary and cultural scientist Daniel Randau from Giessen.

The purpose of the non-profit association is to promote and maintain the writer's works. This purpose serves u. a. Conferences, publications, readings and exhibitions. Particular attention is paid to the Walter Kempowski archive stored in the Akademie der Künste, an immense legacy of unpublished texts and working materials by the author. In order to support literary and linguistic research on the life and work of Walter Kempowski, the society has set up a series of lectures; Lectures and readings take place at the universities in Giessen and Heidelberg .
