Coordinates: 31 ° 5 '  S , 152 ° 50'  O Kempsey Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 3,375.7 km² and has about 29,000 inhabitants.

Kempsey is located in the east of the state on the Pacific coast about 425 km northeast of the metropolis Sydney and 510 km south of Brisbane . The area includes 114 hamlets and towns, including Arakoon, Bellbrook, Burnt Bridge, Clybucca, Comara, Crescent Head, Five Day Creek, Fredrickton, Gladstone, Grassy Head, Hat Head, Jerseyville, Kempsey , Kinchela, Millbank, Sherwood, Smithtown, Stuarts Point, Turners Flat and Willawarrin. The Shire Council is located in the West Kempsey district in the east of the LGA. The city of Kempsey has about 10,600 inhabitants.

The Kempsey Shire Council has nine members who are elected by LGA residents. Kempsey is not divided into districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
