Kenan (bible)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kenan ( Hebrew קֵינָן) is the name of two biblical characters in the Old Testament . The name contains the same root word as Cain , but the interpretation as "blacksmith" is only a folk etymology .

Kenan, son of Enosh

Kenan is the eldest son of Enosh and grandson of the Set . According to Gen 5,9-14  EU his father was 90 years old when he fathered him. He himself became a father for the first time at the age of 70. He named his eldest son Mahalalel . Then he is said to have lived another 840 years and had many more sons and daughters. Kenan thus died at the age of 910.

Kenan is mentioned in the family tree of Jesus in Lk 3.37  EU .

Kenan (Septuagint)

In the Septuagint , Kenan ( Greek Καϊνάν Kainan ) is the son of Arpachschad and the father of Schelach , so another generation is inserted between Arpakschad and Schelach. It follows the book of anniversaries , in which Kenan (8.1) is also mentioned.

The family tree of Jesus refers to the Septuagint, so that Kenan is mentioned in Lk 3.36  EU .
