River course

The Kenemich River has its origin in a nameless 560  m high lake in the Mealy Mountains , 20 km from the south shore of Lake Melville. The Kenemich River initially flows 10 km south. Then he turns towards the west-southwest. It flows almost dead straight for 40 km along a fault and finally leaves the mountains. In the lower 50 kilometers, the Kenemich River flows north and shows a meandering behavior with numerous river loops. About 3 km further west, the much larger Kenamu River also flows north. Both rivers flow into the north shore of Lake Melville. The mouths are just 5 km apart. The Kenemich River has a small estuary, the Carter Basin . 13 miles west-northwest on the opposite bank of Lake Melville is the North West River community . The Kenemich River drains an area of 699 km². The top 40 kilometers of the Kenemich River are within the Akami-Uapishkᵁ-KakKasuak-Mealy-Mountains National Park .

Fish fauna

The following fish species were found in the Kenemich River: Atlantic salmon , brook trout (anadromous and non-anadromous form) and unspecified carp fish (Cyprinidae). The salmon population in the river system is considered safe.
