The mountain was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) on the basis of terrain measurements and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1960–1966. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named him in 1968 after Richard E. Kenfield, a USGS engineer who worked at Byrd Station from 1963 to 1964 .
