Kenkichi Sonogashira ( Japanese 薗 頭 健 吉 , Sonogashira Kenkichi ; born October 25, 1931 in Kagoshima Prefecture ) studied chemistry at the University of Osaka in Japan, he was a professor at the Osaka City University between 1981 and 1995 . Sonogashira discovered the Sonogashira coupling named after him , a palladium - catalyzed cross-coupling between aryl halides and terminal alkynes .

Sonogashira retired in 2004.
