Kennedy Tlali Kamoli

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kennedy Tlali Kamoli [ kɑˈmʊdi ] (* 1965 or 1966 in Basutoland ; mostly Tlali Kamoli ) is a former Lesothic general. He led an attempted coup in August 2014 after his dismissal as commander of the Lesotho Defense Force (LDF), but got his office back in 2015. Under his leadership, the work of the army was associated with numerous acts of violence. On December 1, 2016, he left his post as commander of the LDF.

Life

Kamoli was born in 1965 or 1966. At the age of 18 he joined the Lesotho Paramilitary Force (LPF), today's Lesotho Defense Force (LDF). He holds a BA in Public Administration from the National University of Lesotho and a Masters in Public Relations from the University of Botswana . In 2006 he headed the LDF's secret service . In March 2012, he was promoted to command of the LDF with the rank of Lieutenant General.

On August 29, 2014, then Prime Minister Tom Thabane ( ABC ) deposed him and replaced him with Lieutenant General Maaparankoe Mahao . The following day, soldiers loyal to Kamoli carried out an attempted coup against the Thabane government, which failed due to the flight of members of the government and Mahaos and the subsequent intervention of troops from neighboring countries. Kamoli refused to give up his position and operated from hiding; it was believed that he had a large arsenal at his disposal. An arrest by the South African police did not take place despite an arrest warrant for treason ; Instead, following negotiations under South African Vice President Cyril Ramaphosa , it was decided in October 2014 that Kamoli, Mahao and the commander of the Lesotho Mounted Police Service should stay abroad until an early election date.

The 2015 elections resulted in Thabane being voted out in favor of Pakalitha Mosisili , who in May 2015 reappointed Kamoli as commander retrospectively to August 29, 2014, as Mahao's appointment was allegedly invalid. In April 2015, soldiers shot dead a well-known businessman who was considered an important supporter of the ABC. Kamoli is also held responsible for the arrests and torture of many soldiers who are allegedly loyal to the Mahao. On June 25 of the same year, Mahao was shot dead by soldiers loyal to Kamoli. This led to a special meeting of the responsible members of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), who ordered an investigation. The commission of inquiry met from July 2015 and became known as the Phumaphi Commission . Mosisili long refused to accept the Commission's final report. Only when the SADC threatened the exclusion of Lesotho from the community did Mosisili relent. In February 2016 it was announced that the report called for the removal of Kamolis. Kamoli remained in office for the time being.

On November 8, 2016, the government announced that Kamoli would hand over his post to Major General Khoantle Motšomotšo on December 1 of that year, according to the guidelines . Apparently, this also happened under pressure from the USA, which otherwise would not have extended the AGOA trade agreement. Motšomotšo, however, was considered loyal to Kamoli. Nevertheless, two officers loyal to Kamoli shot and killed Motšomotšo in September 2017, apparently in order to carry out a coup. The two officers had met with Kamoli shortly before the crime. Kamoli was arrested and interrogated on October 11, 2017 and subsequently charged with the murder of a police officer on August 30, 2014 and 14 attempted murder.
