geography

The church village of Keppeln is about two kilometers north of the center of Uedem. The old farming communities Buchholt, Halvenboom, Heidkamp, Hollen, Steeg, Totenhügel and Verkält also belong to Keppeln.

history

The first documentary mention of Keppeln comes from a document from the Xanten monastery from 1173. The place name refers to the location of a chapel. Since 1441 Keppeln formed its own parish and in 1485 the church that still exists today was built.

Since the 19th century, Keppeln formed a rural community in the mayor's office of Keppeln (since 1937 Amt Uedem) in the Kleve district in the Düsseldorf administrative district . During the Second World War , Keppeln and its peasantry were almost completely destroyed in February 1945 by heavy bomb attacks, prolonged artillery fire and days of fighting. In the Totenhügel peasantry, as part of Operation Blockbuster , a tank battle between the Wehrmacht and the Canadian armed forces that lasted several days was costly .

On July 1, 1969, Keppeln was incorporated into the municipality of Uedem by the law on the reorganization of the district of Kleve .
