The Kerkis ( Greek Κέρκης even Kerketeas Κερκετέας ) is with 1434 m the highest mountain of the Greek island of Samos .
It is located in the west of the island and is the second highest mountain in the Aegean after the 1624 m high Fengari on Samothrace , not counting the elevations on Euboea and Crete .
There are several routes to climb the rocky mountain with no vegetation in its summit region, the top of which is also called Vigla. Sturdy shoes, surefootedness, plenty of water and good physical condition are required. Marathokambos is the most common starting point.
On August 3, 1989, an Olympic Airways plane launched in Thessaloniki crashed on the mountain; all 34 inmates were killed.
