location

The largest urban district of Samos is located in the southwest of the island. The area extends over an area of 48.097 km² from the bay of Plaka (Όρμος Πλάκας) in the west, along the southwest coast with numerous capes and small bays and then over several kilometers on the Gulf of Marathokambos (Κόλπος Μαραθοκάμπου). The area extends up to about 4 km into the interior of the island and reaches the highest point of Samos with the 1434 m high Kerkis . Neighboring local communities are in the west Kallithea and from northwest to north Drakei , Kosmadei , Kastania , Karlovasi , Agii Theodori and Platanos of the municipality of Karlovasia and in the far west Koumeika .

The small town of Marathokambos is about 4 km north of the coast at an altitude of 250 m. It is located away from the main traffic axes. The distance to the ports of Karlovasi in the north is 15 km, to Samos in the east of the island about 45 km and to the airport about 31 km.

Marathokambos

To this day, the place has been able to preserve its image with houses built close together, narrow streets, staircases, archways and small squares. Most of the buildings are built along the highway, there are only a few other streets. Marathokambos is increasingly threatened with emigration. In addition to the Kerkis west of the village, olive groves, which almost reach down to the sea, shape the image of the area. A major fire in 2000 destroyed part of the forests and olive trees around Marathokambos.

history

The first settlement near today's Marathokambos was founded in the second half of the 16th century by people from Chios in the somewhat lower-lying area Loukeika (Λουκαίικα). Due to the short time before by Kilic Ali Pasha won privileges granted by the Sultan of almost uninhabited island of Samos, people settled until the end of the 17th century from the Peloponnese , probably from Gythio or neighboring Marathonisi , of Karpathos , Ikaria and Crete to . Probably because of the pirate attacks at that time, maybe also because of the better supply of water, the place Marathokambos was built on a higher place. The location between two streams in the middle of impenetrable vegetation provided more security. Later the place expanded further south and west.

After Samos was annexed to Greece, Marathokambos was a rural community from 1918 to 1997 ( Kinotita Marathokambou Κοινότητα Μαραθοκάμπου). Initially, in addition to the coastal town of Ormos Marathokambou, only the nearby inland villages Sevasteika and Sakkouleika belonged to the rural community. When it was recognized as a settlement, Agia Kyriaki followed in 1928 , Paleochori in 1961, Kambos in 1971 and Isomata, Limnionas and Velanidia in 1991. In 1997, through the territorial reform, the union with four other rural communities to form the municipality of Marathokambos . The four island communities created at that time were merged by the Kallikratis program decided in 2010 to form the community of Samos , Marathokambos received the status of a city district (Δημοτική Κοινότητα).
