Mavratzei ( Greek Μαυρατζαίοι ( m. Pl. )) Is a village in the center of the Greek island of Samos . Together with the Gionides settlement and the Timios Stavros Monastery (Μονή Τιμίου Σταυρού) the village forms the local community of the same name ( Topiki Kinotita Mavratzeon Τοπική Κοινότητα Μαυρατζαίων) in the Pythagorio district .

The village of Mavratzei is located on the southeastern foothills of the Ambelos Mountains at an altitude of about 250 meters. The Vathy-Karlovasi road (Επαρχιακή Οδός Βαθιού-Καρλοωάσου) runs south below the village. The Gionides settlement is right on a junction of the road to Mavratzei. The closest places are Mytilinii about 3.9 kilometers northeast, Chora 3.9 kilometers southeast and Koumaradei 2.8 kilometers southwest.

Adjacent local communities are Vourliotes in the north, Mytilinii in the east, Chora in the southeast, Myli in the south, Koumaradei in the southwest and Pandroso in the west.

history

The village was first mentioned by Tournefort in 1702 as Gueitani (Γαϊτάνι) .

The village was under the administration of Khoras from the middle of the 19th century . The French explorer Victor Guérin describes Mavrandzei in 1856 with 350 houses, 4 churches and a school. He mentions the 200-year tradition of silk production. In 1869 the village consisted of 60 houses and a church, the 267 inhabitants were mostly farmers.

At the beginning of the 20th century, according to Hauttecœurs, 472 inhabitants lived in the village, and the production of beautiful and solid ceramics is mentioned .

The village formed a rural community from 1918 to 1997 ( Kinotita Mavratzeon Κοινότητα Μαυρατζαίων). The Timiou Stavrou Monastery was incorporated in 1920, and Gionides in 1971 after it was recognized as a settlement . Through the territorial reform in 1997 , the union with ten other rural communities took place to form the municipality of Pythagorio . The Kallikratis program adopted in 2010 brought the four island communities together to form the community of Samos , Mavratzei received the status of a local community (Τοπική Κοινότητα).
