Koumaradei ( Greek Κουμαραδαίοι ( m. Pl. )) Is a village in the center of the Greek island of Samos . Since 2011, the village and the Megali Panagia monastery have formed the local community of the same name ( Topiki Kinotita Koumaradeon Τοπική Κοινότητα Κουμαραδαίων) in the Pythagorio district .
location
Koumaradei is located on the southeast side of the Ambelos Mountains at an altitude of 330 meters on the Vathy-Karlovasi road (Επαρχιακή Οδός Βαθιού-Καρλοωάσου). The monastery Megali Panagia (Μονή Μεγάλης Παναγίας), which is administratively part of the local community, is located on the road to Myli a little more than a kilometer south of the village. The closest places are Pyrgos just under 3 kilometers west, Mavratzei just under 2.8 kilometers northeast, Chora 5.9 kilometers east and Myli 3.3 kilometers southeast.
The Koumaradei community is bordered by Pandroso in the north, Mavratzei in the east, Myli in the south and Pyrgos in the west .
history
The village was first mentioned by Tournefort in 1702 as a Com (m) area . It may also be identical with the village named Komar or Kokar, which was listed in an Ottoman poll tax register as early as 1632 . This assignment to Koumaradei has not yet been conclusively clarified, but is considered identical due to the geographical proximity of other places mentioned in the register. The place name is derived from the fruits of the strawberry tree , which are called koumara (κούμαρα pl.) In Greek .
At the time of the Principality counted Coumareidi the former town Chora. In 1869 the village consisted of 66 houses and a church. The 248 inhabitants mainly operated in agriculture. At the beginning of the 20th century the village was inhabited by 341 people.
After Samos was annexed to Greece, Koumaradei formed the rural community of the same name from 1918 to 1997 ( Kinotita Koumaradeon Κοινότητα Κουμαραδαίων), in the meantime the Megali Panagia monastery was incorporated in 1940. With the implementation of the territorial reform in 1997 , the union with ten other rural communities to the municipality of Pythagorio took place . As a result of the administrative reform adopted under the Kallikratis program in 2010, the previous four island communities were merged to form the municipality of Samos , while Koumaradei received the status of a local community (Τοπική Κοινότητα).
