history

The remains of an ancient fortification with Cyclops masonry near the village give Paleokastro its name. In Byzantine times, the nearby church of Agios Tryphon was subordinate to the Athos monastery of Ivrion . The village of Paleokastro was first listed in an Ottoman poll tax register with 20 families in 1633 . According to a report from the second half of the 17th century, Palaiocastro had 100 houses and a church. The good wine especially Muscat was mentioned. In 1702, Tournefort mentioned Paleocastro in a list of island villages. In contrast, the description of the Bay of Posidonio as a port is more detailed. At the port known as port des galères were the ruins of an old city with the remains of two temples.

With the implementation of the municipality reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, Paleokastro was incorporated into the municipality of Vathy . After the merger of the former municipalities of the island after the administrative reform in 2010 to form the municipality of Samos ( Δήμος Σάμου Dímos Sámou ), Paleokastro is now part of the newly founded municipality of Anatoliki Samos due to the area correction in 2019 .
