After the takeover of the remnants of the insolvent MG Rover initially by the Nanjing Automobile Group and the takeover of this by Shanghai Automotive Industry (SAIC) in 2005, older Rover models were initially produced under both the MG brand and the by the loss of the rights to Rover was added to the Roewe brand . The first generation of the MG 6 is the brand's first newly developed vehicle under Chinese management. The vehicle is produced by SAIC.
The MG 6 is powered by a 1.8 l petrol engine with a maximum output of 98 kW. A version with a turbocharger and 118 kW is also available. Both are available with either a five-speed manual or an automatic transmission . The equipment corresponds to western standards and is thus - like the price - far above what is otherwise usual in China.
After MG had only offered the MG TF in Europe until then , the turbo version of the MG 6 has been for sale since March 2011, but only in the United Kingdom .
At the end of 2010 a notchback version was introduced in addition to the hatchback , which largely corresponds to the Roewe 550 , but looks like the MG 6 from the front.

The car received a 73 percent rating for adult occupant protection and a 71 percent rating for child occupant protection. It also received a 42 percent rating for pedestrian protection and a 71 percent rating for its safety assistance systems.
