Mytilinii ( Greek Μυτιληνιοί ( m. Pl. )) Is the third largest city on the Greek island of Samos with 1982 inhabitants (2011) after Samos and Karlovasi . Together with the surrounding settlements of Kamara, Agia Triada, Potami and Rizovrachos, the small town forms a municipality ( Dimotiki Kinotita Δημοτική Κοινότητα) in the municipality of Pythagorio .
location
Mytilinii is about 150 m above sea level on hills in the northwestern Chisios Valley on the Vathy-Chora road (Επαρχιακή Οδός Βαθιού-Χώρας). The settlement of Rizovrachos is immediately south, Potami Mesokambou more than 6 kilometers southwest near the coast. The closest place is Chora about 2.7 kilometers south. Pythagorio is 7 km south, the city of Samos less than 7 kilometers northeast.
Adjacent villages and boroughs are Vathy in the east, Kokkari and Vourliotes in the north, as well as Mavratzei in the west and Chora and Pythagorio in the south.
history
Remains of fortifications in the area suggest that the area was settled in ancient times. In the middle of the 17th century the place was repopulated by people from Lesbos and called Mytilinii because of its origin.
In the 19th century this was one of the main growing areas for tobacco on Samos. At the peak of tobacco production, annual production was over 1,280 tons. Today Mytilinii is dominated by agriculture. Mainly olives are grown.
With the implementation of the municipality reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, Mytilinii was incorporated into the municipality of Pythagorio. On January 1, 2011, the 2010 administrative reform brought together the former municipalities of the island to form the newly created municipality of Samos ( Dimos Samou Δήμος Σάμου).

The Museum of the Natural History of the Aegean Sea has been located on the southern outskirts since 1994 , replacing the former Paleontological Museum and taking over its important collection of fossils . In addition to the presentation of the fossilized remains of mammals from the Miocene (age: 8 to 10 million years old) excavated in the area around Mytiliniis , the museum offers an overview of today's flora and fauna of the Aegean , including the marine habitat. In addition, minerals from all over the world are on display. The museum, which annually attracts more than 30,000 guests, also houses a folklore collection.
