Pythagorio ( Greek Πυθαγόρειο ( n. Sg. )) Is a small town on the south coast of the Greek island of Samos . From the middle of the 19th century, the then called Tigani village emerged on the ruins of the ancient city. In honor of the philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras , the place was renamed Pythagorio in 1955. The tourist center of the island, together with other settlements, forms an urban district (Δημοτική Κοινότητα) in the municipality of Pythagorio .

location

Pythagorio

Pythagorio is located in the southeast of Samos on the Bay of Tigani ( Όρμος Τηγάνι ). The neighboring boroughs are Chora 3.5 kilometers and Mytilinii about 3.5 kilometers northwest. The settlement of Nea Poli is 2 km west of the junction to the airport, Karpovoulos 1.8 km east and Poundes 2.2 km on the road to Samos.

history

Pythagorio was built on the ruins of the ancient city of Samos, one of the most famous cities of the ancient world. During the Ottoman rule, only one guard was stationed in the place. The freedom fighter Lykourgos Logothetis had a castle built at the south-western end of the village in 1824. Under the rule of Miltiades Aristarchus (1859–1866), the repopulation of the ancient ruins around the old port began in the mid-19th century. The village was called Tigani (Τηγάνι).

The island of Samos was subdivided administratively in 1918 after it was annexed to Greece. Tigani was recognized as a rural community in 1918 ( Kinotita Tiganiou Κοινότητα Τηγανίου), renamed Pythagorio in 1955 and elevated to a municipal municipality (dimos) in 1989 . Through the merger with ten rural communities that have existed since 1918 as a result of the community reform in 1997 , Pythagorio became the administrative seat of the community of the same name . With the administrative reform in 2010 , the island's municipalities were merged to form the municipality of Samos . Pythgorio has since the status of a municipality ( Dimotiki Kinotita Pythagoriou ( Δημοτική Κοινότητα Πυθαγορείου Dimotiki Kinótita Pythagoríou )) in the district of Pythagorio ( Δημοτική Ενότητα Πυθαγορείου Dimotiki Enótita Pythagoríou ).

economy

Port of Pythagorio

The commissioning of the airport in 1963 led to the change from an economy based on agricultural products to the development of tourism on Samos. It stopped the migration from the island, Pythagorio has since developed into the tourist center on the island.
