The village of Kondakeika ( Greek Κοντακαίικα ( n. Pl. ) Older spelling also Κοντακεΐκα) is located in the northwest of the Greek island of Samos at an altitude of about 180 m on the northwestern foothills of the Ambelos Mountains . The closest places are Ydroussa 3 km south and Karlovasi about 3.5 km west.
Kondakeika has 517 inhabitants and counts with the surrounding settlements of Agios Dimitrios (Άγιος Δημήτριος 231), Agios Ilias (Άγιος Ηλίας 33), Agios Nikolaos (Άγιος Νικόλαος 25) and Vryses (Β.
Based on the place name, it is believed that the founders of the place came from the island of Kos . To the west of the village are ruins of a Genoese fort on the Kastrovouni (Καστροβούνι) mountain . Byzantine settlement remains were found in the wider area. The oldest settlement in today's town, Agios Dimitrios , was founded around 1750.
Kondakeika is one of the few villages on Samos that can boast a growing population. On the one hand, this is due to the proximity to the nearby town of Karlovasi; on the other hand, the secure income from agriculture gives the prospect of being able to live in the village. The main line of business is growing vegetables in greenhouses. The cultivation areas extend along the coast to the Karlovasi plain. In the small coastal settlement of Agios Nikolaos , the northernmost place on Samos, a tourist offer is increasingly developing.
With the implementation of the municipality reform according to the Kapodistrias program in 1997, Kondakeika was incorporated into the municipality of Karlovasia. The 2010 administrative reform brought the former municipalities of the island together to form the municipality of Samos . Since the correction of the administrative reform in 2019 in two municipalities, Kondakeika belongs to the municipality of Dytiki Samos .
